Austin, Texas is the state capital with a growing population of 750,000 in town and 1.6 million in the metro. You better stake your place because we will grow to 3 million by the year 2030. Surrounding towns include Cedar Park, Lakeway, Round Rock, Leander, Pflugerville, Hutto, Kyle, Buda, and Dripping Springs.
Why all the growth? Austin is a vibrant city that is well educated and hard working. The city and federal government account for some of the largest employers, but don’t forget Dell, IBM, and The University of Texas. The tech segment and education are large forces in the economy, and they just keep bringing more people to town.
Because of the large university and the tech segment, Austin is one of the younger cities in the America. Maybe this is why it is so full of life, or maybe the weather has something to do with it. Warm temperatures year round allow plenty of outdoor activities. Lance Armstrong calls Austin home, so you will see plenty of cyclists following his lead. The 5 lakes that are made up of the Colorado River give us plenty of water sports and beautiful parks. Join the 70,000 people at Zilker Park for Austin City Limits Festival or hit the art scene on the Congress Bridge during the Austin Fine Arts Festival. Then there’s the Hot Sauce Festival, the Bat Festival, South By Southwest Music Festival, and Pecan Street Arts Festival. These are only a few of the MANY events that go on year round. Every month there are family friendly entertainment options.
Now we can’t talk about Austin without talking about it’s title as Live Music Capital of the World. Musicians play anywhere from local parks to major venues. 6th Street is the heart of the music scene with clubs lining both sides of the street. Continental Club, Antones, La Zona Rosa, and the Austin Music Hall are larger venues with more well known artists. We love to share bar-b-que at Stubb’s and then catch a show at their outdoor ampitheater.
Austin is typically known for Tex-Mex and Bar-b-que, but is that such a bad thing? If you have more refined tastes, try some of the best Italian at Vespaio, nationally known sushi at Uchi, or a perfect steak at Austin Land and Cattle.
